What you can do now
Confirm whether the outage is utility-wide before resetting breakers or touching equipment.
Run portable generators outdoors only, far from windows, doors, garages, and vents, using the manufacturer’s connection method.
During cold weather, monitor indoor temperature and consider freeze risk if heat is off for an extended period.
Check the basement for rising water if you rely on a sump pump.
Once power returns, verify the boiler or furnace, well pump, sump pump, refrigerator, and internet-connected alarms actually restarted.
For a vacant property, arrange an in-person check after a long outage rather than relying only on cameras or smart thermostats.
