Find the main water shutoff, label it, and confirm it can be turned without forcing it.
Keep the building at a reliable minimum temperature and verify the thermostat is actually calling for heat.
Open sink cabinets on exterior walls so warm indoor air can reach plumbing during severe cold.
Check fuel levels, boiler or furnace access, and make sure vents and exterior exhausts are clear of snow.
Arrange a local person to check an empty home after prolonged cold or a power outage.
Save your plumber, heating provider, utility, insurer, and caretaker contacts where another person can find them quickly.
