SAFE FIRST STEPS
What you can do now
Look from a safe distance for downed wires, leaning poles, hanging limbs, damaged rooflines, and blocked access before walking the property.
Keep everyone away from downed utility lines and anything touching them; report those conditions to the utility first.
Photograph wide views and close details before moving debris when it is safe to do so.
Inside, check ceilings, windows, the electrical-panel area, basement, and mechanical room for new water.
Use buckets or towels only where there is no electrical or structural risk; do not climb onto a wet or damaged roof.
Write down when the storm occurred, what changed, and any temporary steps you took for the insurer or contractor.
